My
visit to the prison happened just before the initial stages
of a road expansion project that saw the demolition of the
prisons eastern outer wall. What always struck me about the
prison, was how well preserved it was in terms or period originality.
One can only imagine having been a prisoner here when it was
in full operation, only a couple of decades ago.
When the eastern outer wall finally came down, we saw an amazing
public response to it, with large crowds gathering at night
to witness the destruction. Many called for the sites preservation,
but these calls were too little and too late. A few years
later, the prison proper was itself bulldozed into the ground,
with little public outcry or press coverage as had been seen
previously. Pudu's iconic twin towered main gate however was
spared; of course just a mere heritage token piece in the
greater scheme of things.
