Designed
in the international style, this once high end apartment block
has sat mothballed for a number of decades in the heart of
the city.
I’ve always admired the building from
afar and finally got a chance to see it up close when a
friendly security guard offered to show me around. He lived
by himself in one of the dark ground floor apartments.
The building reminded of some old flats
I use to visit in Singapore in the 80’s dating from
the around same era. The design is pretty harsh, just look
at the depressing bathroom and near pointless window above
the bath.
The caretaker led me around
the building for about half an hour, clomping up the steps
and fishing out a big bunch of old keys, locking and unlocking
doors as we went. The tour ended as we found our way back
to the main central staircase and back out the front double
glass doors. I thanked the caretaker for his time and went
on my way back into the chaos of the city.
