First having
discovered this on the internet this was something not to
be missed and plans put in place fast to visit it. By no
means was this the only surviving portable steam engine
in the country. Old relics of engines can still be found,
although they are getting scarcer. Many locals think these
portable engines were like trains to pull things. These
were in fact the portable generators of their time, powering
industrial equipment like pumps or agricultural machinery.
It was surprising to find
this Garrett so complete. Most of its main bits seemed still
there, including all 4 wheels and even its large flywheel.
What was noticeably gone was the portables main smoke stack.
Of course overall the engine was far from perfect and was
heavily rusted out, but for a usually non steam engine fan
like myself, I was still well impressed.
Unfortunately, within the last 5 years the old Garrett has
seemingly disappeared from this location! I can only hope
it went to a place where it will be preserved. But, when
I see the wanton vandalism and theft from the historic Victoria
bridge just a few minutes down the road from this location,
it doesn’t fill me with much confidence at all.
What’s the old building
behind the Garrett, you ask? That’s Tok Setia mansion.
At the time of my visit it was being used as a metal fabrication
shop..
