This Olympics sized
swimming pool was located on the edge of Muar town in the
state of Johore. It was first planned for in the late 1960’s
and finally built and completed in the late 1970‘s.
I believe the pool was still in operation in the 1990’s,
but then it saw dwindling public interest and could no longer
sustain itself as a business.
The pool had sat derelict for years
and became infamous with locals being known as a breeding
ground for all kinds of wildlife, including large monitor
lizards. On my first visit here I encountered 3 huge lizards
basking on the edges of the pool, whom upon seeing me dived
into the murky waters and disappeared from sight.
The pool itself had all the trappings of a quality competition
swimming pool, with fixed starting blocks at one end and
a high diving board at the other.
For years locals had pressed
the authorities to resurrect the site, or in the very least
redevelop it, but nothing was done. Then in 2015 I paid
the location a revisit and was surprised to find the site
had completely changed. The pool and its ancillary buildings
had gone and all that was left was an empty bare grassy
field.
