This old cinema
sits in the heart of a little rural town which itself is
now mostly vacant. Most of its population having moved away
or retired elsewhere.
The cinema itself went bust
in the 1990’s, having been a popular place for rubber
estate workers to get their only dose of weekend movie entertainment
in the area. Most of the cinema was stripped out after its
doors finally closed. All the seats were gone in the main
hall and the ticket booth and power rooms were all left
bare.
Just behind the ticket desk
there was a small door, it looked to lead on to a small
gloomy side room. I stumbled into the small room and as
my eyes adjusted to the gloom I discovered a rickety set
of steep wooden steps the led upwards. This surely was the
access to the projector room!
As I climbed up the steps,
it creaked and swayed under my weight. With each step up,
more and more of the room above revealed itself to me. Finally
as I got up to the top my jaw dropped, I couldn’t
believe it, the projectors were all still here!
Inside the dingy little room nearly everything
had been left in place. Both projectors were still bolted
to the floor, old cupboards and boxes containing spare parts
lined the walls. On the floor and on a small table were
spooled reels of old movies.
I I was so consumed by
what I had found, I think I spent nearly an hour in just
this little room alone. What a find!
