bunkers and concrete shelters:-
were several of these structures dotted about on Pengelih hill.
from what I could tell, observation posts, pillboxes and simple
concrete shelters with a "V" shaped floor plan.
There were 2 structures that interested me the most, one appeared
to be a shelter for one of the 8 pounder guns (pic10) and another,
near the oil storage area (pic9), seemed to be a parts store.
I did initially think it could be for ammunition, but being so
close to the oil dump seemed rather dangerous.
All the structures were in pretty bad condition, one would imagine
some of the damage was caused by the British own denial scheme
implemented before they surrendered. However unfortunately there
is also much modern day damage and vandalism. Scrap iron merchants
have clearly been tearing away at this site for some time and
the casual day tripper graffiti tags can be seen, with some even
dating back to the 1970's.
